Black Health & Well-Being

3 Steps to Improve Your Well-Being!

Simply put, focus on your health and well-being now! Here are 3 key steps to improve your health and therefore, your wealth!

We know from the COVID-19 pandemic that our health can impact our wealth. Missing annual exams, insurance and healthcare costs and sadly burial expenses can impact your wallet and our community well-being. And now, the overturn of Roe v Wade creates another health challenge.

Historic inequities in healthcare run deep in public and private healthcare systems and create disadvantages across our lifespan. The NAACP is committed to ending racial health disparities. They state, “In the U.S., our collective unwillingness to ensure affordable, accessible, quality, and timely health care for all has cost too many Black lives and unnecessarily compromised our nation’s health and economic security. The U.S. is overdue for a health care system that truly bolsters health for all its people rather than fragments them further.” The Legal Defense Fund provides a thorough Q&A on Reproductive Rights and Racial Justice.

Here are some steps you can take today to improve your health and well-being:

Vote! As we stated in our article “3 Steps to Close the Racial Wealth Gap and Improve Your Bank Account!“, public policy is needed to address discrimination that negatively impacts your bank account. The overturn of Roe v Wade can reverse gains Black women have achieved in education and employment. According to the Washington Post, Black women will be especially impacted by the reversal of Roe v Wade. Racial disparities in health care worsen pregnancy and maternal risks for Black women. Black women have more health risks, less insurance coverage, and therefore, worse maternal health. Many Black women are living in southern states with some of the nation’s most restrictive abortion laws. We need to make our voices heard at the ballot box.

Fight for your healthcare, and thereby your life! Obtaining insurance, finding a primary physician, having annual physical exams, and obtaining correct diagnosis and treatment are challenging for all Americans, but particularly for the Black community due to the lack of affordable healthcare. In addition, we face different health challenges.

A recent episode of Amazon Prime’s Harlem, titled “The Strong Black Woman” highlights the challenges that Black women face with fibroids in obtaining treatment. Nielsen Scarborough data shows that Black women between the ages of 35 to 49 are nearly six and a half times more likely to have been diagnosed with fibroids. Yet this crisis is largely silent outside the Black community. We need to fight for better healthcare to fight for our lives.

Save! Having savings is essential to meet any unexpected healthcare costs…but almost impossible to achieve if it’s not done automatically! Wealthy people know that if money goes in your pocket, it’s almost impossible to save. Therefore, an automatic savings plan that deducts money from your paycheck or bank account, before it goes into your pocket, must be part of your financial plan. Starting an automatic savings plan whether is $25/month or $300/month. See how quickly your savings can grow HERE.
